چکیده

We consider a variant of the Bin Packing Problem dealing with fragmentable items. Given a fixed number of bins, the objective is to put all the items into the bins by splitting them in a minimum number of fragments. This problem is useful for modeling splittable resource allocation. In this paper we introduce the problem and its complexity then we present a 6 5 -approximation algorithm for a special case in which all bins have the same capacities.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items

In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...

Online Algorithms for 1-Space Bounded 2-Dimensional Bin Packing and Square Packing

In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90◦-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot acco...

A note on dual approximation algorithms for class constrained bin packing problems

In this paper we present a dual approximation scheme for the class constrained shelf bin packing problem. In this problem, we are given bins of capacity 1, and n items of Q different classes, each item e with class ce and size se. The problem is to pack the items into bins, such that two items of different classes packed in a same bin must be in different shelves. Items in a same shelf are pack...

An experimental comparison of some heuristics for cardinality constrained bin packing problem

Background: Bin packing is an NP hard optimization problem of packing items of given sizes into minimum number of capacity limited bins. Besides the basic problem, numerous other variants of bin packing exist. The cardinality constrained bin packing adds an additional constraint that the number of items in a bin must not exceed a given limit Nmax. Objectives: Goal of the paper is to present a p...

Towards Bin Packing (preliminary problem survey, models with multiset estimates)

The paper described a generalized integrated glance to bin packing problems including a brief literature survey and some new problem formulations for the cases of multiset estimates of items. A new systemic viewpoint to bin packing problems is suggested: (a) basic element sets (item set, bin set, item subset assigned to bin), (b) binary relation over the sets: relation over item set as compatib...
